What it is: Cosmetic rhinoplasty is performed to improve the shape and appearance of the nose. Most commonly this involves reducing the size of a large nasal hump or correction of a drooping or crooked nasal tip. Cosmetic rhinoplasty often enhances a patient's overall appearance by creating a nose that is in better proportion and harmony with other surrounding facial features. Also many patients enjoy easier breathing because of a more open, reconstructed nasal airway.
Where it is Done: Cosmetic rhinoplasty can be performed on an out-patient basis.
What to Expect: Post-operative nasal packing is left in place for 5-7 days. Incisions are generally placed internally and are not visible.
Anesthesia and Medication: Cosmetic rhinoplasty does not always require general anesthesia where the patient is put to sleep. However, depending on the areas to be treated and the length of the anticipated surgery, general anesthesia may be recommended.
Recovery: Most patients have recovered well enough to return to work in approximately two weeks. For social engagements, a three week convalescence is recommended. Most patients can resume vigorous exercise in 1-2 weeks post operatively.
