What it is: An abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is performed to flatten and tighten the anterior abdomen. This involves the surgical removal of excess redundant abdominal skin and fat, as well as the tightening of underlining abdominal muscles. This creates an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer, often enhancing body image and self confidence. Abdominoplasty is often combined with simultaneous liposuction of the hips and upper thigh areas to compliment the overall contour and definition of the trunk. Candidates for an abdominoplasty include women who have had multiple pregnancies and are finished with child bearing, as well as patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and are left with a sagging, protruding abdomen.
Where it is Done: It is usually performed on an out-patient basis in a day surgery center.
What to Expect: A transverse scar is placed in an inconspicuous area, most often beneath the bikini or bathing suit line. Two small plastic drains are left in place for approximately one to two weeks. These drains are then removed easily in the office during a post operative visit.
Anesthesia and Medication: Abdominoplasty most commonly requires general anesthesia, especially if the procedure is combined with liposuction.
