What it is: Breast augmentation enlarges a woman's breasts by the surgical placement of breast implants. In general, this is a cosmetic procedure performed to fulfill the desire for fuller breasts by enhancing breast size, contour, shape and projection. Breast implants allow women the option of fuller, more natural appearing breasts and a more balanced figure. Typically breast augmentation provides for greater self confidence and self esteem. Procedure: Breast implants can be placed either above or below the chest wall muscle beneath the breasts. Placement position is discussed and determined pre-operatively at the initial office consultation. These breast implants are expertly placed through small incisions by Dr. Murtagh.

What to Expect: Post-operative drains are usually not required. Rarely a temporary drain may be left in place which is then easily removed in the office during a post-operative visit. Post-operative scarring is rarely visible. Multiple international studies on breast implants have proven that breast implants are safe. Findings of these studies concluded that breast implants do not cause breast cancer or any other systemic disease. Over 90% of women report no compromise in nipple sensation following breast augmentation. Although it is very unlikely, breast implants can rupture. A ruptured breast implant is easily removed and replaced with a new one. This does not generally cause any long-term difficulty.

Anesthesia and Medication: Breast augmentation does not necessarily require general anesthesia where the patient is put to sleep. General anesthesia is recommended if the breast implants are to be placed beneath the chest wall muscle.
